This midslope area of Mt. Porte Crayon is covered by mixed deciduous forest (Betula alleghaniensis, Prunus serotina, Acer saccharum, Fagus grandifolia with occasional Picea rubens. National Forest upslope (high quality habitat on Mt. Porte Crayon). Some threat of eventual ski area development. Cleared area around gas well head to southwest could be source of invasives. Round-leaf orchid in bud on upland 1m. From plot.;No roads or trails within 1/2 mile. Linear seep fed by groundwater from banks and small trickle of baseflow from upstream. Down wood and mature trees along edge of seep indicate it has been undisturbed for some time. Seep is shaded by overhanging birch and sugar maple trees. This seep is on the WestVaco land and could be logged at WestVaco's discretion.
Representativeness
This is the largest and best developed of 8 seeps crossed today on Mt. Porte Crayon. For a seep, it has clear boundaries and few if any upland inclusions. Other seeps seen today also had Chrysosplenium americanum - this one may be too steep for the specie
